Why Health and Safety Jobs?
Health and safety jobs are those that protect common people from any harm in their work place and in public places. These health and safety specialists have a role in every facet of business today. During the last few years, there has been a shift towards health and environmentally-safe processes in companies and this has increased the demand for these technicians. More and more employers are looking to make work places safe and healthy for their employees. Starting from ergonomically designed furniture to regular quality inspection of work place and equipment, everything aspect of health and safety is handled by these technicians.
Another major employer of these jobs is the Governments at different levels. The role of these technicians in Government jobs is to collect samples of air, water, sand and soil and check for its purity levels. They will also have to regularly inspect construction sites, work places and public places to check if they meet the safety guidelines laid down by the Government. Besides these jobs, safety technicians also have to come up with ideas to prevent the leakages of hazardous materials into the atmosphere. In case of chemical accidents, they have to analyze the cause and come with a process to prevent it in future.
The above job description shows the all-encompassing nature of this job. You can choose this occupation as your career for many reasons. Firstly, a good demand is expected for these jobs in the next decade. Local Governments, mining companies, research companies, schools and colleges, hospitals, multinational corporations and consulting companies are expected to hire more people to make work places safer for their employees. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the demand is likely to go up by 14% to 19% by 2018. All this simply means you have a high prospect of finding a health and safety job.
The second aspect is the expected salary and benefits. As demand increases, there is a higher possibility for wages to go up. The median income in May 2008 was $45,360, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and this figure is expected to go up in the next few years. Also, there is a higher level of job security, especially if you have a job in any form of Government.
Thirdly, there is an opportunity for growth in this field. With a Bachelor's degree and certification courses, you can become a supervisor or manager. However, you should have an in-depth knowledge in this field and you should stay abreast of the latest guidelines and policies of the Government to move up the ladder.
Finally, you have the satisfaction of creating a better world that is safer and healthier for your fellow human-beings. By doing your job, you do an invaluable service to the environment and for future generations. This job satisfaction can be immense in the long-run.
